Why is cooling so important after a cardiac arrest?

Protective cold after cardiac arrest

The chances of survival of resuscitated people increase significantly. Cooling down to 32 to 34 °C has proven to be safe. Stroke and craniocerebral trauma are also discussed as indications for hypothermia (therapeutic hypothermia).

Despite current treatment recommendations, therapeutic hypothermia is still used far too rarely after cardiac arrest.
