When minutes and seconds count between being and not being - every year, 14 April is rightly national action day for 144. It is dedicated to three numbers and the people who can be reached at this number: The emergency number 144, which we can dial in an emergency to get help quickly.

Form an emergency lane!

The fact that every layperson would be an important support to the paramedics in the first three phases of the chain of survival is something we only realise when we take a closer look. If an ambulance takes an average of 12 minutes to reach the scene of an accident, we laypeople can fight for a person's life in these crucial minutes. When in doubt, an action is always FOR life. Not to act is AGAINST life.

But there is something else - actually something bubie simple - that we can do when we are on the road in a vehicle: form an emergency lane! It's surreal to think that everyone wants to be rescued as quickly as possible.

But if it were precisely a matter of ensuring that the ambulance gets through traffic jams or after-work convoys without delay, many road users would misjudge the width, stop too little on the right or not at all at the side of the road. This fact is now being explained in a wide-ranging campaign on all media channels, even had to be enshrined in law and is even fined in Austria for non-compliance.

Please form a rescue lane! So remember the dimensions of an emergency vehicle, which may also help you out of a dead end back into life!

And if you have parked in the emergency lane, stop gawping - it unnecessarily hinders any rescue in distress!
