Switzerland needs more defibrillators

Only in 26 % of out-of-hospital circulatory arrests in Switzerland is an AED used within the required 5 min.

In the event of circulatory arrest, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is used within 5 minutes. This desired level of achievement should be 90% according to the Inter Association for Rescue (IVR) and Swiss Resuscitation Council (SRC), but the actual level of achievement is only 26% (SWISSRECA Annual Report 2019-2021).

The first public annual report on out-of-hospital circulatory arrests in Switzerland has been published. The report was produced in collaboration between the Interverband für Rettungswesen (IVR) and the Swiss Resuscitation Council (SRC) on the basis of over 18,000 data sets and provides interesting insights into patients, causes and outcomes. For example, the average age of circulatory arrest patients is 68 years, 70% of those affected are men, and in two-thirds, out-of-hospital circulatory arrest occurs in the home. In addition, the report provides preliminary information regarding the National Survival Strategy for Circulatory Arrest.
