Defibrillator regulation

Every year in Switzerland, more than 8,000 people die outside of hospitals as a result of sudden cardiac death. This often occurs as a result of ventricular fibrillation. A defibrillator is the only effective means of saving the life of the person affected.

In companies and public buildings, a defibrillator is a potential lifesaver.

Although the introduction of defibrillators in public buildings is not mandatory, they can save the lives not only of your own staff but also of visitors and other people seeking help in an emergency. It is important for defibrillators in public facilities to be easily accessible. The device should be located in a highly frequented area so that it can be found quickly.

Compulsory defibrillator in the school or kindergarten

When using defibrillators on children, there is not too much difference compared to an adult. A standard defibrillator can be used on children and adolescents without hesitation. There is no obligation to provide defibrillators in schools or kindergartens. But in general it is true again: defibrillators save lives and are a useful and sometimes necessary aid in the context of first aid.

Even without a legal obligation, it is advisable to have AEDs on site

Cardiac arrhythmias that can lead to sudden cardiac death are usually unpredictable and can occur even in apparently healthy people. The chances of survival in such a case decrease rapidly without the use of a defibrillator. Some people believe that legislation needs to change, because there is still no mandatory requirement for defibrillators. But even without a legal obligation, it is advisable to have AEDs on site.
